Ilavenil Vasuky Jayapalan

Ilavenil Vasuky Jayapalan (b. 1991) is a transdisciplinary artist based in Oslo, Norway. Jayapalan’s works are highly inspired by the world of cinema, music, and media. Often evolving around and in between the mechanisms of national consciousness, the notion of freedom, truth, and desire to speculative futures that depart from the contemporary fringes of society. Ilavenil’s video work explores the complexities of the multicultural queer gaze and the tension between actions, thoughts, and responses that come with it. It reflects on grandiose narratives, dating apps, botany, and the philosophies of rebirth, tranquillity, and rational self-control. It comprises a Noir-style poem, close-ups of phenomenological movements, and an abundance of different sexed flowers. The work explores pre-reflexive activities linked to sexual desires and cultural pressure, such as marrying and having children.
Jayapalan participated in the group exhibition Indoctrination: Multivalent Gestures, curated by Dahir Hussein, Fotogalleriet's first Curatorial Fellow, spring 2024.
