FOTOBOKFESTIVAL OSLO / NORDIC DUMMY AWARD 2016

Fotobokfestival Oslo welcomes you to a ten-day programme examining the photo book as an artistic medium and phenomenon through exhibitions, lectures, launches, workshops and much more! Fotobokfestival Oslo, formerly known as Flere Sider Fotografi (Various Sides of Photography), was established by Forbundet Frie Fotografer (FFF) in 2009, and is now an annual event taking place during September every year.

In 2016, FFF and Fotogalleriet are hosting the event Week 37 initiated by Nordic Photography Network, resulting in a Nordic focus for this year´s Fotobokfestival Oslo. We will also exhibit the shortlisted books from the Dummy Award Kassel (Fotobookfestival Kassel) and Nordic Dummy Award (Fotogalleriet, Oslo).

In addition to this, Fotobokfestival Oslo also collaborates with MELK, Fotografiens Hus and Tronsmo bookstore, who are developing other programmes as part of the 2016 festival.Full program will be published beginning of August.

Week 37: Nordic Favourites
We are proud to announce Fotobokfestival Oslo in 2016 as host to Week 37, an annual event initiated in 2014 by Nordic Photography Network. The network consists Galleri Image and Photographic Center (DK), Northern Photographic Center (FIN), Centrum för Fotografi (SE) and FFF and Fotogalleriet (NO). With Week 37 as a starting point for this year´s Fotobokfestival Oslo, the main exhibition at Youngstorget presents artists and photographers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

Nordic Dummy Award 2016
Nordic Dummy Award (NDA) is awarded annually by Fotogalleriet, Oslo in connection with Fotobokfestival Oslo. Artists with a connection to the Nordic countries are invited to submit their photobook dummy, and a recognized jury selects a shortlist of candidates and a winner. The shortlisted books including the winner are exhibited and announced during the Fotobokfestival Oslo in September each year. The winner book is published by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg and launched during FFO the year after.

The Nordic Dummy Award was initiated in 2012 by Fotogalleriet and The Norwegian Association of Fine Art Photographers. Today it is administrated by Fotogalleriet with support from the Norwegian Photographic Fund and the Nordic Culture Fund The jury for 2016 consists of JH Engström (SE), Eva Eicker (GB), Klaus Kehrer (DE), Kristine Kern (DK) and Marie Sjøvold (NO).

Dummy Award Kassel 2016
At Youngstorget we also present the 52 shortlisted books from Dummy Award Kassel (Fotobookfestival Kassel) until 14 September. The shortlist jury have announced three winning books, and the First Prize winner will be given the opportunity to realize their dummy as a »real« book in cooperation with our production partner, Verlag Kettler (Germany) The three winners are:

1st prize: Mathieu Asselin “Monsanto, a photographic investigation”
2nd prize: Hiroshi Okamoto “Recruit”
3rd prize: Zhang Lijie “Midnight Tweedle”

Festival book shop and café
At Youngstorget you will find our festival bookshop in a separate container, with books provided by Fotogalleriet, and you are also welcome to sit down for refreshments at our festival café.

Fotogalleriet presents “For a gentle song would not shake us if we had never heard a loud one” as part of Week 37. The group exhibition shows work engaging with the Arctic region through story-telling, exploration and research.

Fotografiens Hus presents the exhibition LED by Bård Ek, a project where the photographer explores orchestrating nature by the use of artificial light. LED will also take form as Bård Ek´s fourth photo book, which of course will launch in connection to the exhibition at Fotografiens Hus and Fotobokfestival Oslo.

MELK is proud to show a new series of work by Lund Bø, opening at our new location in Waldemar Thranes Gate 51, August 18. The series Ping Pong Belong consists of photographs printed on cotton canvas. Selected colours from the photograph are painted on the canvas, as if suggesting an imminent painting yet to be made.

Tronsmo bookstore, located in Universitetsgata 12, will highlight their section of photo books during the festival. In addition to their normal selection, they have a special treat during the festival: they have selected a number of choice titles from a personal collection, built up during the last 25 years. Many titles, and quite a few rare ones. And for the occation, the prices will be low. They also want to invite you to their photobook launch on Friday 16. Sept at 17:00. The (so far) fairly unknown Oslo photographer Lise Holm is self publishing her book Zoo Entrance, and we will host an artist conversation between her and the (not so unknown) Oslo photographer Morten Andersen.
