This autumn, Fotogalleriet’s Youth Advisory Board presents the exhibition Tredje Rom – a project developed by and for young people, grounded in cultural theorist Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of the third space. In Bhabha’s theory, the third space designates a dynamic in-between zone that emerges through encounters between different cultures, experiences, and perspectives. It is a space where identity is negotiated, boundaries are challenged, and new forms of community can arise.
Building on this understanding, the Youth Advisory Board has explored how subcultures, countercultures, and alternative communities create and sustain their own third spaces. At the same time, they have sought to establish a corresponding space within Fotogalleriet itself.
Since 2022, Fotogalleriet’s Youth Advisory Board has offered young people between the ages of 17 and 25, from diverse socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds in Oslo, a genuine platform for participation in the art field. The project was initially launched through Kulturtanken, in collaboration with TrAP and Nøkkel til byen. Following the pilot year, it was continued as a three-year project funded by Sparebankstiftelsen DNB. Its members Abdirahmaan Hasan, Esma Bouhaddouz, Hamda Barise, Selma Beyoglu, and Karl Ian Centino, represent a wide range of experiences, interests, and subcultures, and form the core curatorial team behind Tredje Rom.
Through an open call, young artists from varied backgrounds were invited to submit their works to a jury consisting of the Youth Advisory Board members, guided by the project’s producer, Camilla von Køppen, and Fotogalleriet’s Head of Exhibitions, Miki Gebrelul. The selected works together reflect a multiplicity of expressions, experiences, and narratives. The result is an exhibition that both investigates and embodies the third space as a dynamic and inclusive site.
works with video, text, and photography. With a linguistic starting point, she explores the encounter between poetry and the analog film medium. The video work “Et sted her / elegi til tomrommet” examines human alienation and indifference, as an emotional consequence of the present.
is studying advertising and brand communication. She is passionate about photography, and will debut at Fotogalleriet with her photo series consisting of the works “Perleportalen”, “Skuldre mot skuldre”, and “Vektløse grenser”.
is attracted to the details, excitement and atmosphere that lie just outside the obvious. Inspired by raw, documentary photography, Farhad use the camera to explore emotions, relationships and spaces. It is not only about telling a story. His work is a tribute to the small moments that often go unnoticed, focusing on local, social and (sub)cultural themes. He holds a degree in Fine Art photography from Norsk Fotofagskole Trondheim. Farhad has exhibited at Kunsthall Oslo, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, and Gamle Munch.
works camera-based, with a particular interest in screen culture and power structures. Mateo is currently a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. He has previously participated in exhibitions at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Kunstnernes hus, Kunsthall Oslo, Gamle Munch, and Galleri Taxi.
works mainly with text, textiles, and research-based art, as well as music. World politics, literature, local politics, mothers, dogs, cars and boats are attacked, often associatively and/or satirically. Sometimes with roots in both punk and journalism. With ambitions to reclaim the city of Oslo from the Great and the Bad, the concept of third space/no space is both vital, nostalgic, inspiring and enervating for Stella.
works with photography. She has finished one year at Prosjektskolen in Oslo, where she also explored text, poetry and reading as part of her practice.
is a multidisciplinary artist working with mediums such as collage, installation, and photography. Her work is rooted in storytelling – whether abstract or literal – she employs a visual language that explores dichotomies: the individual and the universal, the personal and the shared, and how opposing forces can coexist, influence, and transform one another.
is studying at Einar Granum Art School. She is interested in opposites such as belonging/loneliness and freedom/limitation. Her works often have a relationship to movement either through the motif depicted, the camera or the copying process. This reflects her analogical photographic process which is spontaneous and intuitive. She has previously exhibited at Gamle Munch, Kunsthall Oslo, Omnibus Studio and Galleri Granum.
works with analog photography, drawn to its unpredictability. His works focuses on capturing fleeting, authentic moments, aiming to preserve the vibe of what is lived rather than staged or performed. He is a student at the Art, Design and Architecture program at Elvebakken, and works part-time in art communication and outreach through programs such as Blikkåpner and the PRAKSIS teen advisory board.
has graduated from Oslo Fotokunstskole. He has exhibited at Oslo Negativ, the photo festival in Copenhagen and Galleri Pellerin.
He usually works with photography as a starting point before exploring further using other techniques and formats.
is a multidisciplinary artist based in Oslo. She is currently studying sound and music production while also exploring being a DJ.
Habiyambere is interested in the intersection between art, social justice and sustainability, which is reflected in her work in photography, text, redesign, sound and in her bachelor’s degree in social work. She has exhibited her works at, among others, Nitja – Center for Contemporary Art and Kunsthall Oslo and she runs the “Art Club with Maria Habiyambere” which is a meeting place for artists and art enthusiasts with multicultural backgrounds.
is working in the border between documentary and snapshot photography, where one’s own behavior and emotions become a large part of the perfect work. The local environment, people, music, underground culture and the disorienting and euphoric nightlife are aspects he is drawn to.
The Youth Advisory Board programme and Tredje Rom is supported by Sparebankstiftelsen DNB.
